Training health workers in setting up rehabilitation services

The foundation believes that the provision of heathcare services for persons with disabilities involves a group of multidisciplinary professionals including healthworkers. In collaboration with the Ghana Health Services, Healthcare managers received training on setting up and provision of essential rehabilitation services. This was a very interactive and brainstorming session on cost effective and practical ways of establishing healthcare services for adolescents with special needs. We will definitely get there!

Community Outreach

Backed by an amazing team, we reached out into the community of Alabar , a suburb of Kumasi to provide education on disabilities, stigmatization and rehabilitation services available to community members. Community chiefs and leaders who play a very important role in our work were present and promised to assist in removing the stigmatization of persons with disabilities. We were excited to do this in collaboration with the Manhyia District Hospital.

Samuel is a young man whose dad suffered a stroke about a year ago and has been receiving rehabilitation services at KATH. His poor parents can only afford to come for rehab once a week due to transportation costs. I was struck by Samuel's humility as he always accompanied his Dad to the hospital. When he expressed interest in Orthotics and Prosthetics, I knew I had to do my best to help him. Orthortists/ Prosthetists are health professionals who design and make medical supportive devices (assistive devices) for persons with disabilities. The Step out Foundation helped him gain admission to the Br. Tarcisius Prosthetics and Orthotics Training College in Nsawam and needs GHS 3000 (three thousand) to pursue his dream.
His mother, a petty trader, has been able to raise less than a quarter of the amount. School however starts next week. Let's help Samuel learn a profession in order to support himself and his family.
